He told, the current generation middle class Indian desires to own a Maruti Car. It is the great success of his founder, Mr. Sanjay Gandhi, who had the dream to gift an affordable cars to the home of middle class India. It was very hard to shape his dream but it was a true and whole hearted well wish. So it becomes truth in spite of hurdles. He started to tell the evolution of small car to a global auto maker.
Sanjay Gandhi was the son of then Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. He took apprentice training for three years in the premiere, automobile company, Rolls Royce in London, United Kingdom. He had a keen passion for cars. He returned back to India in 1968 and decided to run his automobile venture. He then rented a garage in Roshanara Bagh in Delhi. Later he established the company called Maruti Motor Ltd.
On the other ways, Government of India initiated for the manufacturing the small car indigenously. It is discussed for self reliance & government control in automobile industry, direct government revenue collection from public sector units and moreover employability of the people of the country. Another major part was the earning of foreign money through it's exports. So the Planning Commission and Government of India endorsed the Sajay Gandhi's automobile projects. Being the core member, Sanjay got the favour of the cabinet minister, though it was criticised for nepotism of Cabinet of Govt. of India.
Then Indira Gandhi was the Prime minister on seat, and in september,1970, her cabinet issued the letter of intent to produce 50000 cars in a year. Getting the order in August, 1971 he established the company called Maruti Motor Ltd as the first Managing Director. accordingly Govt. arrange to acquire 297 Acres land in Gurugram District in Haryana. The land compensation @12000 per acres paid to the land lord. The land & works were ready but design & manufacturing were still pending. First prototype was designed in 1972. The chassis was designed by Sanjay Gandhi himself. This was propelled by a Triumph motor Cycle Engine. The first commercial car by Maruti was produced in 1973 though this car failed in feasibility conducted by Vehicle Research and Development as described as unsuitable for road compliances. In-Spite of hindrances from competent authority, Govt. of India gave permission to produce 50000 cars annually. But Maruti failed to produce even 21 Cars till December, 1976. By the time Sanjay joined directly in politics and Indira Gandhi was defeated in 1977. Thus Sanjay project was back footed with a court order of it's inception procedure. After Indira Gandhi's return on office in1980 and with sentiment of Sanjay death in a plane crash, his Maruti Project was reinstated.
Indira Gandhi asked Arun Nehru for feasibility of Sanjay's people's Car. He confirmed of the prospect of the project subject to expertise venture. So govt. Searched joint ventures and started negotiation with Suzuki, Japan in April, 1982. Accordingly in October, 1982 Suzuki of Japan & Government of India signed a license and joint venture agreement as Maruti Udyog Ltd. Suzuki agreed with only 26% stack in the venture and rest was acquainted by Govt. of India. Maruti 800 small car was launched in December, 1983. Later in April 1984, the another car as Maruti Van 800 was launched. With havoc welcome Suzuki overwhelmed with it's first year booking of 120000 cars in the first year of it's launch. With the growing prospect of this venture, Suzuki gradually increased it's stack 50% in 1992 and 56.21% in 2013.
Thus the growth of his venture opted for launch & manufacture new models gradually. Maruti opens it's diversified approach for multi dimensional business verticals such as insurance, loan & credit financing, true value exchange, competitive bonus on purchase, authorized domestic and international distribution. Thus Maruti became the best selling car in 2004 with 40% market shares in Indian Automobile Sector. However, Maruti reaches to home of Middle class. That is a Grand success of Sanjay Gandhi. It may give a joy in his departed soul.
However, the confliction Maruti is the cheapest car in the world with the comparative features with other car manufacturers. Maruti is a sentiment of common Indian even to peoples of Asia and Africa. "By the grace of Sanjay's noble venture, we own the S-Presso car at our home"-Aziz told his audiences.
