Eerie Shouting along the Canal at Selarpur-Midnight Mystery.
This is a ghost story of fifty years back happened to my father, Abdul Kader Ali. It looks like a fairy tale but I still believe to be true as it was depicted by my father. However it might be passed but it still erects our hair follicles through our body while we think of the mysterious night.
Ghost in Canal |
Before telling the story, I say that my father was a school teacher and a dramatist. He could narrate everything in a very artistic way so that his audience listened to him in a pin drop silence environment. Most of the night we insisted him to present a horror story. He presented many folktales happened in their times. This ghost story was depicted in a winter night in late December. Here I am telling as he told us.
There is a suburban town Dubraj Pur where the villagers sell their crops and vegetables. They also buy their daily goods and consumable in this market. They usually come to time market in the very early morning even at the dawn. One day my father planned to buy potato seeds from Dubraj Pur, So he arranged for the bullock pulling cart by which the villagers used to move in those days. Cart operator, Basir Ali was called in the very early morning at 2.00 hrs. That was a full moon night. They started their journey in a desolated surroundings. The whole road was covered by the faint shadow caused by the restricted moonlight through the plants and trees. At the end of the village, Selarpur there was a long canal around the village. While they went to their market they had to pass the bridge of the canal. The bullocks were walking their motion but sometimes they were excited themselves and running very whimsically. It was very uncanny while passing across the bridge. It was felt some thing like phantom shadows were standing by the bullocks. The eyes of the animals were glowing red hot while seeing the ghostly entity. Suddenly Basir screamed in fear, "Uncle! Uncle! Come close, Someone is holding my hands." My father was sitting by his side and found no such thing there. He then tried to make him fearless and told, "Nothing! go ahead." Basir was frightened and a chill wind passing through his spine. Though father consoled him but he felt the existence of the canal digging ghosts in the dark night. He then started to tell the facts of the canal digging.
One day he, my father woke up for latrine pass, he went out alone and sat in the bamboo garden beside the bank of a pond outside the village. It was a lone place, all were sleeping except the crockery frog, barking dog and whistling fox. These horror sounds were coming from the grave yard. It was faint modulation of human sound of crying for escaping from the heap of clay. The sound just like Kamal! Mansur! save me. Then he clarified in his narrative.
The canal is still passing through the village Selarpur in Birbhum District under state of West Bengal in India. It was dug by the British government in India for the irrigation and flood control. It was a huge project. The machineries for excavation were brought from England. The project charge was Gorge Watson was a good engineer but still he could not save some of the workers engaged in digging work underground. Suddenly the machine was operated, a huge lump of stone and soil was fallen on the workmen. Some of them died inside the clay and stone, other was severely injured & died soon. To avoid compensation payable to the injured, they were deliberately buried inside the canal. These unsatisfied souls were roaming occasionally at midnight. We were all in severe fear after listening the story. We felt someone would come soon. Father is no more but we still feel his sound. There are so many such horrified stories we have. All will be published soon.
